The Complete File

With the film "adaptation" of the 1980's series The Equalizer released in September 2014 (starring Denzel Washington), I've had fun revisiting the series I remember fondly from my teens and learning more about the other work of its star, Edward Woodward.

Theme Song

Stewart Copeland, who was drummer of The Police and has scored various films, wrote the theme song for The Equalizer. He scored the show for roughly its first two and a half seasons. He also appeared in a cameo in the second season episode, "Re-Entry".

Several songs, including the theme, from the show written by Copeland are available on an album called The Equalizer & Other Cliff Hangers. If you enjoy Copeland's theme song (and how couldn't you?), this album is worth seeking out.

Copeland also released extended versions of the Equalizer theme song on an EP called The Equalizer Busy Equalizing. The two extended versions are slower and darker than the version you hear on the show. I have been unable to find these excellent versions in digital form but the EP can be sought out.

The theme also appears on Copeland's album Orchestralli in a jazzed-up version.

Equalizer-esque music from Copeland on his album The Rhythmatist is also an intriguing and fun listen that I highly recommend.

You can also find a terrific everything-but-the-kitchen-sink live version of the theme song on the album The Stewart Copeland Anthology.
